Streptococcus agalactiae,or group B streptococcus(GBS),infection is an important cause of bacteremia and meningitis in the neonate(16,24,46). Although it is considered an infrequent etiologic agent of disease in adults(11,15)a number of series reporting severe infection due to GBS have been recently published(5,18,29).GBS meningitis,an entity thought to be rare in adults,has been increasingly reported.We report here 4 adult cases of GBS meningitis seen at our institution(Yale-New Haven Hospital)and at an affiliated institution(Hospital of Saint Raphael)in the past 25 years and review the literature of adult GBS meningitis reported to date. |
